About one-half of America's
adult drivers – 51 percent or approximately
100 million people -- are on the roads feeling
sleepy while they drive.
|
 |
Nearly two in 10 drivers --
17 percent or approximately 14 million
people -- say they have actually fallen asleep
at the wheel in the past year. |
It
is reported in one study that about 10 percent of serious
automobile crashes are fatigue related. Fatigue does
not seem to be yet fully recognized as a clear source
of potential harm because most people suffer from it,
and crashes do not always result from being overly tired.
What makes matters worse, fatigue is difficult to measure,
but it is clear that the performance of a fatigued driver
can be similar to that of a person who has drunk enough
to reach the blood alcohol limit.
It's
a national epidemic, and chances are it has happened
to you, to fall asleep behind the wheel. If you are
lucky, you simply hit the rumble strips on the side
of the road, and swing back on the road wide awake.
For the unfortunate, it can lead to accidents, sometimes
fatal ones.
But
there is help with the Sav-a-Life Doze Alert!

The Sav-a-Life Doze Alert is quite simple but works
wonders! The Sav-A-Life Doze Alert is a device that will
warn you that you are dozing off at the wheel, one of
the sure signs of fatigue. The unit slips behind
either ear with or without glasses. When your head tilts
forward, as it would when you nod off, the Doze Alert
emits a buzzing sound, which will cause you to raise
your head back to the safe driving position. The device
is lightweight and battery operated- the battery is
included.
WARNING!
Doze Alert is not designed to keep you longer on the
road!
Once Doze Alert has beeped and warned you that you are
dozing off,
PULL OVER, discontinue driving immediately and take a
rest before going back on the road! Your safety and that
of other drivers are at stake!
Why do we need the SAV-A-LIFE Doze Alert?
The
National Sleep Foundation
recently issued a Wake-Up Call to Fatigued Drivers.
According to a 2002 Sleep America Poll
by the National Sleep Foundation,
Millions Drive Drowsy And Fall Asleep At The Wheel!
Drowsy
Driving affects more than half of the drivers on our
highways: Here are some more figures:
 |
51 percent of adults who drive say
they have driven a vehicle while feeling drowsy
in the past year. –
Gender: males (56 percent) vs. females (45 percent)
–
Age: 18-29 (71 percent), 30-64 (52 percent), 65
plus (19 percent) –
Adults w/children in household (59 percent) vs.
those without children (45 percent)
|
 |
As far as actually falling asleep
at the wheel an astounding 17 percent of adult drivers
report dozing off while driving at least once in
the past year –
Gender: males (22 percent) vs. females (12 percent)
–
Age: 18-29 (28 percent), 30-64 (16 percent), 65
plus (6 percent). |
Males and young adults between 18 and 29 are at the
highest risk for drowsy driving and falling asleep at
the wheel, according to the NSF poll; in fact, more
than two-thirds of these young adults who drive, (71
percent), report driving while drowsy in the past year.
Adults with children in the household are more likely
to drive drowsy than those without children while older
adults, 65 and over, are the least likely to drive drowsy
or to fall asleep at the wheel.
Several signs indicate fatigue while driving, though
many people may not associate the symptoms with fatigue
or sleepiness and continue to drive when they should
stop. Warning signs of drowsiness or fatigue include:
 |
Difficulty focusing, frequent blinking,
or heavy eyelids – |
 |
Trouble keeping your head up –
|
 |
Yawning repeatedly –
|
 |
Trouble remembering the last few
miles driven; missing exits or traffic signs –
|
 |
Drifting from your lane, tailgating,
or hitting a shoulder rumble strip |
Says Richard L. Gelula, NSF's executive director. "This
is a wake-up call to everyone who drives a motor vehicle:
driving while feeling drowsy or fatigued is a lethal
combination, and is no less an impairment than driving
while drunk."
